Landmark US case on female circumcision

A case for those who are interested in the interface between universal human rights and cultural relativism. When does something stop being a unique cultural practice and become a criminal offence?

In a decision which is believed to be the first of its kind in the US, a Judge in Georgia sentenced an Ethiopian man to 10 years in prison for performing female circumcision on his two year old daughter. On Saturday, supporters of the man attended a rally in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, asking that the man be retried.

I have always thought that circumcision of boys except for Actual medical reasons is an unnecessary mutilation but the mutilation imposed upon girls by this despicable practice should be punished to the full extent of the law. Ten years does not seem enough to me for actual bodily harm, especially when you consider possible remissions.
