Octroi – what is it?

I have already mentioned my passion for the word champerty in a previous post.

A friend has found another interesting legal word for my collection: octroi.

Apparently it means a tax levied on goods brought into a city, or a concession for a guild (especially in France). I shall have to think of a way to drop it into normal conversation.

Has anyone else come across any cool legal words lately?

Legal Eagle, you’ve used ‘bought’ when you mean ‘brought’. Looking at the comments on your following post on English grammar, what would people say?!

Oh dear, oh dear. Just proves everyone isn’t perfect… The mitigating circumstance is sleep deprivation!
